If you have any questions regarding a project or a current task in our system, please direct your questions to our Fire Marshal at firemarshal@lyonsfire.org.
Fire Inspections
Lyons Fire Protection District currently operates under the 2021 International Fire Code and 2021 International Building Code. Requirements may vary throughout the district depending on the county or town jurisdiction. Lyons Fire Protection District covers three government entities: The Town of Lyons, Boulder County, and Larimer County. This means that there may be different code requirements based on the code adopted by each entity.
Food Truck Inspections
Lyons Fire Protection District does not issue or require permits for mobile food preparation vehicles (aka food trucks). However, food trucks operating in the district are subject to inspection and must comply with the Lyons Fire Code at all times. Food truck operators must display valid inspection/maintenance tags for hoods, fire suppression, and fire extinguishers. Failure to meet these or other code requirements will result in the shutdown of the business.
To increase your awareness of code requirements, review the food truck pre-inspection checklist compiled by the Fire Marshals Association of Colorado. If you would like to schedule a free inspection to identify problems and avoid an unexpected shutdown, contact us at firemarshal@lyonsfire.org
Possession of a food truck permit from another jurisdiction does not excuse operators from inspection or code compliance as affirmed by Colorado HB 25-1295:
A MOBILE FOOD ESTABLISHMENT THAT IS OPERATING IN A LOCAL GOVERNMENT'S JURISDICTION MUST BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT'S FIRE SAFETY CODE DURING OPERATION IN THAT JURISDICTION AND IS SUBJECT TO INSPECTION AND ENFORCEMENT BY THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
Building Projects
Any change of use on all commercial buildings must be approved by the Fire Marshal in conjunction with the building official whose entity the building is in. Plans must be submitted to firemarshal@lyonsfire.org. Businesses will not be allowed to operate without an approved plan review approval and final inspection.
A full set of construction documents created by a design professional must be submitted in an electronic PDF format and sent to plans@lyonsfire.org. The review period for plans, including remodeling, new construction, and residential and commercial properties, will be 15 days starting at the date of receipt by Lyons Fire Protection District. Any questions or concerns can be emailed to plans@lyonsfire.org.
Plan reviews are based on the 2021 International Fire Code (IFC), including amendments in the Fire Code of the Fire District [link to Fire Code]. Applicants should be familiar with the applicable codes for the project location before submitting plans. Applicants are strongly encouraged to work through a licensed general contractor. The combined building and fire codes for the counties, Town of Lyons, and Lyons Fire are complex and require professional understanding. This web page highlights some important code issues, but it provides only a partial overview.
ALL new residential construction requires a fire sprinkler system. Details of the sprinkler system requirements and separate fire cistern requirements are described in the Fire Code of Fire District .
All plan reviews and some inspections will require a fee. Please refer to our fee schedule for specifics.
Fire Investigations
Any fire or explosion that occurs within the Lyons Fire Protection District shall be investigated by the Fire Marshal and/or certified fire department investigators. The investigators work cooperatively with local law enforcement agencies when necessary.
